Pre-School : Welcome to FELP - First English Pre-School at 800 Vernier Road, Grosse Pointe Woods, MI 48236 Phone: 313.884.5040, Contact: Christine Simone, Director/lead teacher School Hours: 3 & 4 year olds: Monday, Wednesday and Friday 8:45-11:15 AM* *There is a possibility of a separate Tuesday/Thursday 3 year old class as enrollment dictates. Fees: Registration fee: $50. Tuition: approximately $970 per year for 3 year olds and $1450 per year for 4 year olds; paid in monthly installments. Adult/Child Ratio: 1:8 Program: We would like to assist you in preparing your child for their kindergarten and elementary years. Children of FELP will have a first school experience that will help develop a positive self-image and social and intellectual abilities in a structured and caring environment. Our program includes art, music, language, physical development, bible lessons, math, science and beginning reading concepts. Children will learn structure as they experience the school routine and enjoy active learning as they explore and create in a stimulating learning environment. Special Events: Special events are varied. They may include special guests (i.e. dentist or firefighter), child and parent open house, Christmas event, Easter egg hunt, end of year picnic, etc.. Parents are always welcome when their schedule allows them to visit the classroom and participate. Certification: FELP is licensed with the State of Michigan. Our Director/lead teacher, Christine Simone, has a bachelor degree in Elementary Education and has also completed the graduate work necessary for an Early Childhood Education endorsement to her Michigan teacher certification. She has a variety of experiences in education at the preschool and elementary level and has been trained in first aid and CPR. Please call the church office (313-884-5040) to arrange a visit.

2008-10-12 Bob Foster Celebration : ORGANIST CELEBRATES 25TH ANNIVERSARY AT FIRST ENGLISH It was a surprise for Robert Foster, Music Coordinator at First English, when he concluded the last worship service of the day at First English Ev. Lutheran Church on Sunday, October 12, and was summoned by the pastors to the chancel for “a presentation” only to discover his mother and sister from West Virginia joining the pastors as an adoring congregation applauded! Also gathering in the chancel were Foster's wife Patty and son Danny and daughter Jesse, all in the Good News Singers choir organization. The presentation by Dr. Walter Schmidt and Rev. Jerry Elsholz was a framed certificate honoring the occasion of Foster's 25th anniversary as Coordinator of Music at the church located at 800 Vernier in Grosse Pointe Woods. Peggy Foster of Wheeling and Laura Joseph, Foster's sister, of Fairmont, were in on the surprise and had arrived in town a few days earlier. Unbeknown to Bob Foster, the Luther Center was filled with set tables and the aroma of good cooking in the air; a book signed by most members of the congregation and a gift certificate were ready for presentation. Jane Stevens and the Worship and Music Committee spearheaded the surprise. Carolyn Schmidt engaged the caterers and Nate and Chris Judson housed the out-of-towners. In attendance were former choir members of First English and performers of past dinner theater musicals which are annually co-directed by Foster. Robert Foster auditioned for the position of organist at First English twenty five years ago and won hands down. He ultimately became Coordinator of Music in charge of the Good News Singers, the Lord's Company Singers and the Lord's Company Ringers, not to mention three worship services every Sunday; in addition, he is music director of the L.I.F.E. Players dinner theater held annually in November. A prodigy from age 5, Foster's family was hard-pressed to convince little Bobby to go out to play –he begged to be allowed to practice the piano, then the organ! At age 11 he gained experience at the organ of a Methodist church, then became assistant organist at a Lutheran church a year later. A shy student in high school and college, he communicated easily with music, ultimately earning bachelor's and master's degrees in organ performance at University of Michigan. First English is fortunate indeed to have Foster's expertise. Along the way, he became accompanist for the vocal director of the Grosse Pointe North High School's music program, and then in 1996 became choral music teacher for grades 6-12th at University Liggett School in Grosse Pointe Woods and co-director of the school's musicals. So during the school year Foster is an especially busy man; in the summer there is some time for composing, another of his talents. Robert Foster's two CDs, “Foster's Favorites,” including the organ music of Bach, Beethoven, Boellman and Franck, are available for sale at First English benefiting the Building Fund at $20 each.
